Scripture Union Daily Guide 12 October 2024 Outline:
Here we see the Holy Spirit at work in an Old Testament narrative.
(1) In the Prophet Samuel. The Holy Spirit is the One who prompts the prophet to go and anoint one of Jesse’s sons as king (v.1), teaches him how to avoid being murdered by Saul (vs.2-3); and reveals to him the person to be anointed (vs.5-12).
(2) In David. The Holy Spirit came upon David when he was anointed for service as king (v.13). This was typical of how He works in the Old Testament, to equip different people for the tasks for which they were chosen (e.g. Bezalel, Exodus 31:2-4; Gideon, Judges 6:34; Samson, Judges 13:24-25, etc.)
(3) In King Saul. The Holy Spirit had come upon Saul when he was anointed king, just as He was later to come upon David (1 Samuel 10:9-10).
Due to disobedience, the Spirit of the Lord departed from him, only to be replaced by an evil spirit (vs.14-15).
